Mr. Durst's Classroom
Management Philosophy
It is my firm belief that classroom management is something that can either make or break a classroom. In our classroom we will be using management as a foundation upon which we will build a successful learning environment. As the students are part of a community, our classroom, they will work together to succeed and achieve great things. As students are individuals, they must take responsibility for the choices they make. My behavioral expectations for my students are quite high, but with the supports that will be in place students will have plenty of opportunities to develop and succeed behaviorally.
If a behavioral issue arises and needs to be addressed, I hope that you will find it reassuring that I have a level of self awareness that is high enough to realize that these issues may be in part my fault. Behaviors deemed undesirable will of course be addressed, but I believe that often times students who have great potential act out because of boredom. I will regularly reflect on my teaching practices, especially involving student engagement, to ensure that students have something that aids them in maintaining a level of interest that deters off task behavior.
Classroom Rules
Rules will be authored by the class. Students will get the opportunity to model what they think these rules look like within our classroom with guidance from myself.
4G CLASSROOM CONSTITUTION:
We promise to…
-always be fair, share, and care.
-push in our chairs.
-prevent bullying.
-be respectful of our classroom.
-turn in our homework.
-have fun.
-be awesome.
-talk nicely about each other.
-respect the smart board and materials.
-take turns talking.
*This set of rules was drafted by and signed into classroom rule by the 2014-2015 4G Class
Rewards/Consequences:
At the beginning of each school day my class will have five points. These points can be added to, kept, or taken away. The end goal is for the class to behave well as a whole. If these points are kept they can earn a party for the entire classroom.
Classroom Dojo will be used to monitor individual student behavior so that parents and students can review a report via the internet at home. Classroom Dojo is a smart technology application that can be accessed via desktop, smartphone, or tablet, it helps teachers monitor student behavior and report it to the students behavior. Students get the opportunity to earn both positive and negative DoJo points, these points all contribute to a pie chart of your student's behavior. These rewards/consequences will always be handed out immediately following a behavior so that students link their choices with the outcomes. These rewards and consequences will be handed out each day of the school year.

Procedures
- Discussion: This is a time in which students' answers and opinions are valued and are not judged. Students will respect their teacher and their peers by not speaking out whenever they would like, but will raise their hands for the opportunity of speaking during class discussion. Some speaking will be done in unison, some communication will be with small groups, or with a partner and instructions for communication volume and location is something that will be decided as those events are reached.
- Read To Self: Students will have previously selected at least three books to read to themselves for at least thirty minutes a day. Students are allowed to sit wherever they are most comfortable within the classroom, unless they become distracting to other students. Students will remain silent unless they must communicate with their current instructor. If students need to find an additional book they are to silently retrieve one from their "book bags." If students have not selected sufficient reading materials they will then get the opportunity to do a re-read.
- Emergency Restroom Visits: Students have the opportunity to use the restroom after read to self, during their lunch period, lunch recess, between specials, and at the end of afternoon recess. Listed are many opportunities during which students are able to use the restroom, so students will be limited to two emergency restroom breaks per school day. To use the emergency pass to the restroom they must first gain my permission to make sure that they are using their visit wisely.
- Students who have an issue with writing speed are allowed to use a provided typing option.
- Deaf students with implants will be connected to the teacher's voice via walkie talkie.
- Students with dyslexia will have the opportunity to have certain important texts read to them.
- Extending time on assessments and scribing can also be utilized within our classroom to help students who have any anxiety or learning disabilities that involve these factors.
- English language learners will be placed within the buddy system.
Birthdays
- Yes, we celebrate birthdays and half birthdays in 4G! Please bring enough treats for everyone to celebrate, including Mr. Durst:)
- Birthday invitations are allowed to distributed at school, if and only if you are inviting every student in the class.
